Childhood Healthy Weight Team
In the Wakefield district we have a higher number of obese children than the national average. In fact the number of obese 5 year olds has doubled in the last 10 years.
Being overweight as a child makes you more likely to be obese as an adult. This makes you more likely to develop diseases such as diabetes, heart disease or stroke.
At the PCT we have a Childhood Healthy Weight team. It works closely with families and our colleagues in education, children's centres, school nursing and the Council to understand:
- why we have more children who are over a healthy weight;
- how we can prevent, manage and treat childhood obesity; and
- how we can reduce the negative impact that obesity has on children's physical and emotional well-being.
To find out about the different ways in which the team can advise, help and support local children who are over a healthy weight and their families, just click on the projects listed on the left-hand menu bar.
The Childhood Healthy Weight team also works closely with the Community Food and Health team and the Physical Activity team who run lots of different projects such as food demonstrations and street dance. You can read about their work by clicking on the links above. We've also put together some top tips about healthy eating for children and how to get youngsters more active.
