Dentists
You need to have your teeth checked regularly by a dentist to ensure your teeth, gums and mouth remain healthy. Your dentist will be able to advise you how often you need a check-up.
There are 36 dental practices and two orthodontic practices in the Wakefield district. The majority provide NHS treatment, however some may not always be taking on new NHS patients.
If you want to register with an NHS dentist, you should contact the West Yorkshire Urgent Care Services helpline on 0345 605 99 99 - telephone lines open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Your details will be taken and passed on to a dental practice that is accepting new patients in your area. The practice will then contact you directly. Currently this will take approximately two to three months from registration to the dental practice contacting you to make an appointment.
Out of hours dental treatment
If you need urgent dental care out of normal working hours and are a regular patient of a dental practice, please contact your dental surgery and an answer-phone message will give you clear instructions on where and when emergency treatment is available.
If you are not a regular patient of a dental practice than again you will need to contact the West Yorkshire Urgent Care Services helpline on 0345 605 99 99. Please note that emergency dental treatment can only be provided for trauma and emergencies. All requests will be assessed over the telephone before an emergency appointment can be arranged, which will be organised within 24/48 hours.
You can find out more about this in the out of hours services section.
