Commissioning specialised services

Specialised services are those services provided in relatively few specialist centres to catchment populations of more than 1 million people.

These services are not provided by every hospital, and tend to be found in larger hospitals based in big towns and cities. Examples of specialised services include renal services (such as kidney transplant and kidney dialysis), blood and marrow transplantation, morbid obesity surgery and services for patients with cystic fibrosis.

To make sure that local people are able to get these specialised services if they need them, we commission them jointly with other primary care trusts in our region. You can read more about the Yorkshire and Humber Specialist Commissioning Group on the Specialised Commissioning Group website opens new window.

We have policies in place that cover the specialised services. You can read them within our General Commissioning policy. Please note this policy is currently in draft format and we will be addding more information soon.
